PROVIDENCE — Sabina Matos's story begins in the Dominican Republic, where her mother was a teacher and her father "the mayor of our home town of Paraíso in the province of Barahona." Her family came to the United States in 1994 "looking for a better life," arriving in New York City on a Friday. Three days later, knowing little English, she went to work shuttling the designs for "The Lion King"-themed children's clothing between a Queens factory and Manhattan.
