CANTON â Following an hour-long discussion, St. Lawrence County legislators on Monday night voted against a resolution in support of Ogdensburgâs home rule legislation that would allow the city to collect up to an additional 1% of sales tax revenue. Legislator David W. Forsythe, R-Lisbon, proposed the resolution at the full county Board of Legislators meeting on July 12, but it was tabled until the boardâs next Finance Committee meeting, which was Monday night. Mr. Forsythe successfully motioned to remove his resolution from the table Monday night, yet the resolution had no further luck in the Finance Committee as legislators ultimately voted 9-4 against it after back-and-fourth discussion.
CANTON â After several months of reworking how the Department of Social Services reports information to the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators, a new framework was rolled out this week. For more than an hour during the boardâs Services Committee meeting Monday night, DSS Commissioner Cynthia M. Ackerman presented data to lawmakers about staffing, caseloads, children in care and case outcomes, mostly related to Child Protective Services and Childrenâs Services. County Administrator Ruth A. Doyle, Assistant County Administrator Dylan M. Soper and DSS supervisors and staff worked to compile and track more detailed department data with Ms. Ackerman, who started as commissioner last summer. DSS reports specifically about CPS and Childrenâs Services were previously delivered periodically in a given year as simple statistics on caseloads and kids in the departmentâs care.

CANTON â The St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators is turning control of the county Department of Social Services legal office over to the county attorney. The board voted 8-6 with one abstention Monday night. Legislator Margaret G. Haggard did not vote Monday night as her husband is the DSS general counsel. The resolution states the reasons for consolidating the office are the assistance the county attorney has given the county Department of Social Services legal staff since December 2019, as well as a request for DSS General Counsel David A. Haggard for additional staff and increased pay. The resolution calls for the abolishment of management positions in the DSS legal office and switching the social services attorney positions to assistant county attorneys and keeping in place support personnel to help the department resolve a backlog of cases.

CANTON â Newly enacted policies for St. Lawrence County pistol permit holders introduced by County Court Judge Gregory P. Storie received praise from the county Board of Legislatorsâ Finance Committee on Monday night. A resolution lauding Judge Storie for adopting the new policies passed handily, with legislators agreeing that the changes restore and augment the rights of permit holders. The adjustments loosen restrictions on how and when St. Lawrence County permit holders may carry their concealed weapon, and allow them to cross-register their firearms with other permitted carriers in the county, regardless of household cohabitation, a limitation introduced by retired County Court Judge Jerome J. Richards.
