California volunteer divers are taking part in a pilot project to crush purple urchins, which have contributed to the destruction of 96% of the state's bull kelp forests.
Scientists are in a race right now to save underwater kelp forests along much of the California Coastline that are being devoured by a species of sea urchin. Researchers say the bull kelp forests play an important role in the region's underwater ecosystem and the survival of area fish and wildlife.
Biologists say they have started to see small successes with the experiments started several years ago, offering hope of reversing destruction likened to a rainforest being clear-cut.
