13 Mar 2021 A Texas border sheriff said changes in border security and immigration policies put in place by President Joe Biden led to a spike in drownings as increasing numbers of migrants cross the Rio Grande. Val Verde County Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez (D) said at least six migrants drowned since the start of the year while attempting to illegally cross from Mexico into Texas triple the number of drownings from all of last year. “I think it’s driven by the lack of this administration addressing immigration issues,” Sheriff Martinez said in a radio interview with The 830 Times in San Angelo, Texas. “In my opinion, when this administration came in, they threw the baby out with the bathwater, and they didn’t have a policy in place, and now they’re struggling to catch up, and from what I’m seeing, they’re not being totally factual as to what they’re doing with these immigrants.” ....
253 Migrants Apprehended in One Hour Along Texas Border with Mexico 6 Feb 2021 Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol agents apprehended two large groups of migrants during a one-hour period earlier this week near Mission, Texas. Agents also apprehended 56 others in a stash house and a failed human smuggling attempt. Late Thursday night, McAllen Station Border Patrol agents apprehended a group of 166 migrants who surrendered to them after illegally crossing the border from Mexico just south of Mission. The group consisted of family unit aliens and unaccompanied alien children, according to information obtained from Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol officials. 253 illegal aliens apprehended in 1 hour. ....

After concerns with local elections in Hidalgo County, Texas Sen. Juan Chuy Hinojosa (D-McAllen) drafted Senate Bill 1402, saying that if and when there are enough signatures on a petition, Texas counties can administer school and city elections. Hinojosa wasn’t immediately available for comment for this story. McAllen mayoral candidate Othal Brand wants Hidalgo County to administer the upcoming city election not the city of McAllen. Brand, and 39 others, signed a petition which was received by McAllen s city secretary on Dec. 23, 2020. ....
