What museums don't reveal about religious art
NEW YORK -- In 1983, at Japan Society in Manhattan, I saw a show of early Buddhist sculpture so beautiful that I maxed out my Visa card to fly to Japan to find more. It was my first time there. I spoke no Japanese. I'd prepared no itinerary. So I started where most art-tourists do, at the Tokyo National Museum. It's a roomy, clean-lined, modern-feeling place. I felt right at home.
