A private hospital in Lucknow, which was booked on the charge of issuing a false alarm for oxygen shortage, has been granted interim protection from coercive action by the Allahabad High Court, which also sought a report from the district magistrate.

Bench asks State govt. to form three-member pandemic public grievance committee in all districts
The Allahabad High Court has said the compensation provided to kin of polling officers who died on duty during the panchayat polls due to the “deliberate act on the part of the State and the State Election Commission to force them to perform duties in the absence of RTPCR support” should be at least ₹1 crore.
The State government had recently told the court that it would provide a compensation of ₹30 lakh to the family members of the deceased polling officers, including teachers and siksha mitras.
“It is not a case that somebody volunteered to render his/ her services during election but it was all made obligatory to those assigned with election duty to perform their duties during election even while they showed their reluctance. The amount of the compensation, in our considered opinion, is very less,” a Division Bench of Justices Siddhartha Varma and Ajit Kumar said on Tuesday.

Covid: Allahabad High Court dials helpline, exposes Yogi claim

Allahabad High Court has exposed the Uttar Pradesh administration’s claims about the reliability of its Covid information system by demonstrating a mismatch between the government helpline and portal on the availability of hospital beds.
It has also described as “a criminal act and not less than a genocide” the state authorities’ failure to supply adequate oxygen to hospitals, shredding chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s steadfast denial of any oxygen crisis.
During a virtual hearing on Tuesday, the bench of Justices Siddhartha Varma and Ajit Kumar asked an advocate, Anuj Singh, to call up the Covid helpline number around noon.

Deaths due to oxygen shortage are no less than genocide, observed Allahabad high court on May 4. “We are at pain in observing that death of Covid patients just for non-supply of oxygen to the hospitals is a criminal act and not less than a genocide by those who have been entrusted the task to ensure continuous procurement and supply chain of the liquid medical oxygen,” said the bench of Justices Siddhartha Varma and Ajit Kumar while hearing a suo moto PIL on media reports that Covid patients had died in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, and in Meerut due to lack of oxygen. This observation came from the high court of the state, where the chief minister has vehemently denied any shortage of oxygen.

PRAYAGRAJ: Taking note of the reported deaths of 135 teachers, shiksha mitras and investigators assigned panchayat election duty, the Allahabad HC on Tuesday issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission (UPSEC) and asked why it failed to check non-compliance of Covid guidelines during multiple phases of panchayat elections.
The court further asked why action should not be taken against it and its officials.
A division bench of Justices Siddhartha Varma and Ajit Kumar further directed UPSEC to “take immediately measures in the remaining phases of panchayat elections to ensure Covid guidelines are complied with, else action would be taken against officials involved in the election process”.
