Richards Hits Historic Stride for River Hawks

Ed Brennen
The night before the biggest race of her life — the final of the women’s mile at the 2021 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas — UMass Lowell’s Kaley Richards spelled out her goal in her journal.
“I wrote that I wanted to finish in the top eight and be an All-American,” says Richards, a Lowell native and Manning School of Business graduate student who had already become the first River Hawk to ever qualify for the Division I indoor championships.
Competing against runners from big-time programs such as Arkansas, Ohio State and Colorado, Richards achieved her goal by finishing fourth with a personal best time and new school record of 4 minutes, 36.26 seconds — becoming UML’s first-ever indoor Division I All-American.

The 2021 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships concluded in Fayetteville, Ark., and the Arkansas Razorbacks won the title 68 to 57 over Texas A&M with a true team performance. The Razorbacks didn’t win a single individual event (the Oregon men won six en route to their title), but scored in 10 of the 17 events and clinched the title with 17 points in the 3000m. It added up to the second-highest score in meet history, behind only the 84 logged by Oregon’s triple crown winners of 2017.

Friday’s action at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships are in the books, and a few new stars earned their first NCAA titles in the distance events. In the 5,000, Auburn’s
Joyce Kimeli won a race no one wanted to lead in 15:48.98. The distance medley relay was the opposite:
Courtney Wayment was more than happy to lead, making a strong push with over a kilometer remaining in the anchor leg to power BYU to the school’s first women’s DMR title.

(12-Mar) — Iowa State’s Wesley Kiptoo and Auburn’s Joyce Kimeli won the 5000m titles on the penultimate day of the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center at the University of Arkansas today, while the men of Oregon and women of Brigham Young took the distance medley relay titles with superb anchor-leg runs.

Kiptoo dominated the men’s race, running away from the field to win in a championships record of 13:23.77.  Wearing black knitted gloves (he later said his hands were cold), Kiptoo started the race aggressively, splitting the first 400m in 59.8 seconds, and the first 800m in 2:01.1.  Although Arkansas’s Amon Kemboi and Florida State’s Adrian Wildschutt remained within striking distance, Kiptoo felt that they were not going to help with the pace and he decided to leave them behind.

After breaking the previous collegiate record with his teammate Cooper Teare in February, Hocker didn’t leave anything on the table in his quest to win the NCAA mile crown.
By the bell lap, the race was Hocker’s as he broke away from the field with every step in the final 200 meters, reaching the homestretch clear of any competition.
