Executives get longer stint at top deck of PSU banks

The latest set of appointments, however, come with a crucial rider — at least for those who have a longer run at the top — the performance of these executives will be reviewed after two years. (Representative image)
NEW DELHI: For long, the government has been criticised for giving short tenures to top management of public sector companies as well as in ministries and departments. Slowly, that seems to be changing.
On Wednesday evening, it designated 44-year-old Nitesh Ranjan, a chief general manager at Union Bank of India, as the state-run lender’s executive director. He will be part of the bank’s top management along with Monika Kalia, 48, his counterpart at Bank of India. Ranjan can potentially spend close to 16 years on the bank’s board, and Kalia will only have a few years less, while 50-year-old Debdatta Chand can hope to spend close to a decade on the board of Bank of Baroda (BoB).

Naveen Patnaik: Odisha government releases KALIA assistance of Rs 1,272 crore to 53 lakh farmers | Bhubaneswar News

BHUBANESWAR: Amid farmers’ agitation across the country, the Naveen Patnaik government on Friday transferred over Rs 1,272 crore to the accounts of around 53 lakh farmers under the KALIA scheme in an apparent move to maintain a pro-farmer image.
Those who received the KALIA assistance include 37 lakh small and marginal farmers and around 16 lakh landless agricultural labourers. While the small and marginal farmers have received Rs 2,000 each, the landless agricultural labourers received Rs 2,500 (around eight lakh, who received second instalment) and Rs 5,000 per head (around eight lakh those who received first instalment).
The assistance under KALIA was released after almost two years. The income support scheme for the farmers, was launched ahead of the 2019 general election. Named after Lord Jagannath, the most-revered god in the state, it was believed to be a game-changer for the ruling BJD to retain power for fifth consecutive terms in the state despite a saffron surge across the country.
