Kenya's film The Letter named in list of eligible films for this year's Oscars

The Letter has been named in the list of eligible films for this year’s Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars.
The nominees for the awards will be announced on February 9, 2021 ahead of the Oscars Academy Awards ceremony scheduled for April 25, 2021.
The Kenya Film Commission has previously selected
The Letter as the country’s official entry for the Oscars’ best international film category. The
Letter is a film by producer-director duo Christopher King and Maia Lekow.
The film follows a young man, Karisa, who travels to his grandmother’s rural home when he learns she has been accused of witchcraft. He discovers that the threatening letter she received came from a member of his own family, and that the accusations have caused a rift among relatives driven by a combination of superstition and economic motives. ....

'The Letter' Exposes Real Witch Hunts Against Elders in Kenya

What led you to make a film about this subject?
When we began this process in 2013, we never imagined where this journey would take us. We were simply curious to explore the oral history of the coast of Kenya and learn more about Maia’s “Mijikenda” roots (the nine tribes that make up the coast of Kenya.)
We had begun researching the story of a female freedom fighter called Mekatilili wa Menza who led an armed uprising against the British in 1913 at the age of 70, and was persecuted as a witch by the colonial administration. As we traveled to the coast of Kenya, collecting this oral history from the elders, they also told us about the witchcraft accusations happening today, with many of (the elderly) chased from their families and press reporting that up to 10 elders were being killed every month. ....
