The Day - UPDATED: Canada approves permit to export beluga whales to Mystic Aquarium - News from southeastern Connecticut

Mystic — The Canadian government has approved a permit to export five beluga whales from Marineland Canada to Mystic Aquarium.
Aquarium President Stephen Coan said Tuesday afternoon that aquarium staff members were at Marineland of Canada in Niagara Falls and the 10-hour transport of the whales to Mystic would occur "relatively soon." He declined to give a specific timeline due to logistics, animal safety and security concerns.
According to several animal rights organizations that had petitioned Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans to reconsider issuing the export permit request, the transfer is imminent. The groups say the move violates the intent of a 2019 Canadian law meant to phase out the captivity of cetaceans by banning their breeding.

Coastal News Today | Canada - Animal rights group trying to stop export of five beluga whales to Mystic Aquarium

While the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service, or NMFS, has approved a permit for the aquarium to import the whales with a five-year ban on breeding them, the aquarium needs Bernadette Jordan to issue the export permit from Canada.
The organization Last Chance for Animals is asking Jordan to deny the permit because the group says the transfer would not only endanger the whales but violate the intent of a 2019 Canadian law aimed at phasing out the captivity of whales, dolphins and other cetaceans as well as prohibiting them from being used for breeding or entertainment purposes. It also restricts their import and export but the minister of fisheries and oceans can approve permits for research purposes if it is in the best interests of the cetacean.

In the span of eight days, four gray whales were found dead in the San Francisco Bay area, their carcasses washed ashore on beaches and state parks.
Experts at the Marine Mammal Center, the world's largest marine mammal hospital, said it's the most gray-whale deaths they have seen in a short span since 2019, when the center performed 13 whale necropsies.
"It's a lot of whales to have stranded in our small area within a week," Pádraig Duignan, the center's director of pathology, told The Washington Post. "We've had four whales come out of nowhere - no premonition or warning that this was on the way."

Opponents of an immense fish farm proposed off the coast of Bird Rock and Mission Beach let members of the La Jolla Town Council know how they feel Feb. 11 as the project is undergoing environmental review.
The Pacific Ocean AquaFarms project, spearheaded by the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute and Long Beach-based investment group Pacific6 Enterprises, would produce up to 5,000 metric tons of yellowtail fish annually in federal waters about four miles offshore.
