Voting in Singapore’s first contested presidential election since 2011 closed on Friday,  a closely-watched three-way race in which former minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam is seeking to become the next Singapore-born Indian-origin head of the state. The polls closed at 8 PM (local time).

Singapore presidential polls close, Indian-origin ex-minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam in race

The polls ended with over 2.7 million voters casting their ballots. This was Singapore’s first presidential election in 12 years as the last one in 2017 – which was reserved for Malay candidates – was uncontested.
