President to appoint two envoys in one foreign mission under new law Tuesday July 06 2021 By JOHN MUTUA Summary The National Assembly committee on Defence and Foreign Relations has proposed review of the law for hiring of two top diplomats with the senior envoy to be offered the title ambassador extraordinary. Kenya is currently represented by a single ambassador in each of its missions and the proposed changes will see taxpayers fork out more for salaries, allowances and rent, piling more pressure on the wage bill. The President will have powers to appoint more than one ambassador to serve a single foreign mission if Parliament adopts changes to a law, piling pressure on the country’s wage bill. ....

Limuru MP Peter Mwathi has been elected to chair the powerful National Administration and Security Committee of the National Assembly. Members of the committee unanimously endorsed Mwathi to take charge of the team following the death of Kiambaa MP Paul Koinange. The committee vice chairperson Fatuma Gedi (Wajir), who had declared interest in the seat, withdrew her candidature in favour of Mwathi, citing intervention by ODM leader Raila Odinga. Currently, the Public Service Commission (PSC) sets the remuneration and allowances for diplomats and staff working in missions abroad. The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) will determine and set the perks of Kenya’s foreign diplomats and their staff if MPs approve a new Bill into law.
