2024 Spring Game Instant Takes

Team Maize defeated Team Blue by a score of 17-7 at today's 2024 edition of the Michigan Football spring game. A game that was preceded by the championship ring ceremony and had numerous departed heroes strolling the sideline, the focus on the field was instead on a number of young players trying to make a name for themselves. As in past years, I'm not going to give a play-by-play recap for an exhibition game, but instead will give you a batch of instant reaction takes on what we witnessed:  OffenseAlex Orji's potential... and areas for improvement. Orji quarterbacked the first drive for Team Blue, as well as the last, with  intermittent snaps in between. In that time we saw some good and some bad from Orji. He varied his touch on throws that showed a decent understanding of quarterbacking, but was mostly throwing checkdown passes. The final drive in particular saw the defense back off (Team Maize had a 10 point lead), ceding the underneath routes and Orji was efficient in connecting on those. But that's what you'd expect any QB at this level to be able to do, so I'm not putting much stock in that. However, there were more tantalizing moments. Orji delivered a pass to Max Bredeson with good zip and then sensed pressure before scrambling for a touchdown on the first drive. He also seemed to have another touchdown scramble on the last drive, but it was overturned on a questionable "sack" (the referees blew the play dead in rather dubious fashion). The athleticism and the ability to hit the easy stuff was on display but there were concerning moments. He put a ball behind Tyler Morris on the first drive and forced a laser into double coverage looking for Zack Marshall on the last drive. Orji also showed good pocket presence on a different snap a couple drives earlier, dancing in the pocket and eventually finding an open receiver on 3rd & 5... but he way overthrew his target. I'm not sure if the accuracy and reads are completely where they need to be, but Orji wasn't a total wreck and gave us enough reasons to believe he could plausibly be the QB in 2024. It didn't answer all the questions at the QB position, but there was enough on display to believe Orji could be a successful QB at some point in the future (whether that is in '24 or '25). Takes on the other QBs. Davis Warren was the starting QB for Team Maize and just like prior seasons, Warren looked pretty damn good. His arm talent is 100% there, which was most on display on a bomb to Kendrick Bell for a TD: 🔔🔔🔔📺 @CFBONFOX pic.twitter.com/G1jgyJAwmO— Michigan Football (@UMichFootball) April 20, 2024There were several other strikes that Warren uncorked and he may well have been the most impressive QB today. However, it does feel a little difficult to take all of it seriously because Warren has looked terrific in spring games prior too, which hasn't necessarily translated to regulation games. Jayden Denegal was a bit of a disappointment in this one I felt. His drives for Team Maize had some moments, but ultimately left a lot to be desired. Yes he did hit a bomb to Fred Moore, but he also threw a wretched interception to DJ Waller (which was punched out and recovered as a fumble), threw a ball that was batted at the line, fumbled a snap that killed the two minute drill in the second quarter, and had a couple other iffy looking throws on the fourth drive. Based on the feel of this game, it would appear that Orji and Warren are the main two in-house contenders for the starting QB this fall. Jadyn Davis didn't play a ton, as expected. He threw a nice ball down the sideline for Peyton O'Leary that was PBU'd which showed off his arm talent, but he did appear to miss a wide open receiver on that very play. That was Davis' most notable moment during a short afternoon and based on today I would expect him to redshirt this fall (nothin' wrong with that). [AFTER THE JUMP: more takes]

Notes: Brother of Ronnie Bell. Twin of Marqueas Bell. Simone Award. Film Senior Highlights: Hudl. This is Ronnie's brother, so very Michigan fan is on board. That's good, since like Ronnie there isn't much from the scouting services to go on. Via an interview with Ronnie on Sam Webb's show, it was Ronnie himself who started showing his brother's tape to Michigan staff: “I thought I was crazy,” Ronnie said. “Last year, it was his first time starting at quarterback or whatever, and I mean, dude, he was just going bananas. He had like five, six, touchdowns some games. So I showed Coach [Steve] Casula who was on staff last year. I'm like, ‘Yo, will you watch my little brother? Am I crazy or is he really, really good?’ Maybe I'm just biased because he’s my brother. Casula (now back with Michigan as TEs coach) became the OC at UMass, and extended Kendrick his first offer in January. Michigan came along in September. Bell: “Coach was telling me, ‘No, he's really good.’ And this year, he grew even more to became even stronger, more athletic, more comfortable, throwing — whatever, blah blah blah. Oh my gosh, he must have scored like freaking 20 touchdowns in the first four games or something crazy. And so then I showed Coach Harbaugh again because it was the same feeling I was feeling. It's like, ‘Am I crazy? Or is he like really good?’ And yeah, Coach Harbaugh loved him and offered him. So that was crazy how that all played out.” We figured when he committed that a move to receiver—or possibly cornerback or safety—was in the future. Turns out Bell's quarterbacking career didn't survive fall camp. That's un-good news for the class's one nominal (non-transfer) quarterback recruit, but probably a good sign for Bell. When you figure out what position the rest of your life is, you want the rest of your life to start right away. Hello: Kendrick Bell

He's Ronnie Bell's little brother. UPSHOT FOR THE REST OF THE CLASS Since the class doesn't have a q— What, you wanted more than that? Okay, let's shake the ol' recruiting networks and see if they've got any stray takes on the quarterback from Kansas City. GURU RATINGS New design! Links are to profiles. Once again 247 and On3 are in complete disagreement, though not as obviously because people don't take the time to differentiate between the vastly different definitions of "3-star." On3 thinks he's a legit prospect, 247 has him ranked down where Michigan's preferred walk-ons end up rated, if they make the rankings at all. Bell was also just recently added however, so 247's rankings should be taken more as a non-opinion than a negative one. Rivals is the only site to rank him as an athlete; ESPN seems to have him as their last 77. [AFTER THE JUMP: He can.]

Post-Entry Outlook: Offense

A week and change on from the national title, attention now turns to the basketball program what Team 145 is going to look like. This may be an exercise in futility since there's a distinct chance that Jim Harbaugh takes an NFL job this offseason, throwing everything into a mild state of higgeldy-piggeldy. But they'd probably just plug in Sherrone Moore, avoid significant portal departures, and be more or less the same minus a predilection for weird press conferences. So. QUARTERBACK Obviously the biggest question mark on the team in the aftermath of JJ McCarthy's draft entry. The options on campus do not feel like plugging in JJ McCarthy, to say the least. They are: Jayden Denegal, a 6'4" pocket passer who was a high three star on the composite and got a reasonable amount of garbage time last year. He'll be a redshirt sophomore next year. Davis Warren, a former walk-on who's looked solid in a couple of spring games but was hurt (probably) much of the year, ceding non-JJ snaps to Denegal. Alex Orji, a Tebow-esque runner who got on the field for various snaps down the stretch where he always ran the ball. Michigan did dial up a pass for him in the Rose Bowl but 'Bama covered it and he ran out of bounds for a two yard loss. Jadyn Davis, a true freshman who was a five star but has slid down recruiting boards to be a fringe top 100 prospect. Davis did join the team for bowl practices and has buckets of experience in high school. In the season preview I asserted that the best case scenario for Michigan entering 2024 is that Orji was the clear frontrunner and I still maintain that because we have an indication he does have an elite skill. I'm not sure the Tebow/Denard offense can be a national title winner in the year of our lord 2024; neither am I sure Michigan can pivot a ton of option stuff that would be necessary. Even so: Orji has It on the ground, and I'm not sure anyone else can say they're there as a passer. [After THE JUMP: loaded RB room… not so loaded WR room]

Carter Smith Has Committed To Michigan

Michigan got a commitment today from 2025 4* QB Carter Smith:  Grateful to have this opportunity! @Hayesfawcett3 @CoachKCampbell @CoachRodeBV @Coach_SMoore @CoachVillegasBV @CoachJim4UM pic.twitter.com/VhdtBglMoM — Carter Smith (@_CarterSmith9) November 14, 2023 The main reaction to this news has been "WHAT ABOUT BRYCE UNDERWOOD?" so let's address that quickly: all the insiders are united that Michigan's pursuit of Underwood will go on but Kirk Campbell has made it clear that he is not going the all-eggs-in-one-basket route for 2025 QBs by taking Smith's commitment. Michigan famously tried that strategy with 2023 5* in-stater Dante Moore, which backfired spectacularly when Moore spurned Michigan for Oregon (later flipping to UCLA) and left the Wolverines empty-handed. They took Kendrick Bell, Ronnie's Who Dat 3* brother, as their "quarterback" but the chance Bell plays a snap for Michigan at QB is low. For all intents and purposes, Michigan did not take a QB in 2023 and the result of that decision is why the team could have to decide between a true freshman and a transfer at QB next season. Campbell decided to learn from Matt Weiss' errors in the 2023 cycle and found a match in Smith, a recruitment that escalated quickly due to significant interest from both parties. Michigan will continue to recruit Underwood, but cannot take any chances with a recruit as high profile as him. If you have another guy you like who wants to be in your program, you should take him when you have the chance. If Underwood wants to join the class and you end up with a 2021 OSU style class with two QBs (the Bucks got Quinn Ewers and Kyle McCord), the more the merrier. If he doesn't, you're still in a good spot.  And a good spot they are. Smith should not be overlooked. If Underwood were a native Texan, everyone would be excited about Carter Smith, a 6'3" signal-caller from Bishop Verot HS in Fort Myers, FL. He is On3 and ESPN's #8 ranked QB nationally, ranked near the top 100 in the former. 247 and Rivals are a bit lower at this point in time but obviously there is a LONG way to go. The On3 consensus ranks him 223rd overall nationally and the 247 Composite has him 213th. With offers from such schools as Texas A&M, PSU, Ole Miss, FSU, Florida, and Miami, no one can claim Smith is an outright bargain bin QB. A full Hello will follow at some point, but Smith appears to be a bit of an opposite of Jadyn Davis, less developed/poised as a passer and more raw overall, but taller, more athletic, and with higher upside (Smith is more JJ, so to speak). If they were to be the 2024 and 2025 QBs Michigan takes, they could be effective contrasts with each other.  There is no content after the jump.

2023 MGoPhotos of the Game (Week 9): Purdue

In another universe, this would be that game that everyone forgets within a few days, much like Nebraska last year or Indiana in 2021. Go ahead, name three things that happened in either of those games. But instead, due to /gestures at all of it, there was a lot of buzz going into Michigan's 2nd matchup with Purdue in 12 months. I knew what everyone was eager to talk about as I got to Ann Arbor. There was exactly one (1) Connor Stalions-esque joke to be made and within a couple hours of tailgating I heard it, or some derivative of it, probably 30 times. Rutgers must have Ohio State's signs- yup got it. Notre Dame needs to hire Connor Sta- YUP. GOT IT. Even just going on Twitter for my hourly short-term loop of dopamine rushes is becoming insufferable. Rumors, lazy jokes, clickbait articles, and reporters dancing around the same three headlines for an entire week is just exhausting. Should I just post wildlife photos on Twitter this week? Do we need a week long timeline cleanse? I know we just had a bye week and that's when it should've happened but I was very much hibernating all bye week. At some point I thought to myself "well at least as a photographer, nobody is relying on me for breaking news or hot takes. They just like pretty pictures. SO HERE. HAVE SOME PRETTY PICTURES. MICHIGAN MOSTLY SPANKED PURDUE AND IT WAS AT NIGHT AND WE'LL ALL FORGET ABOUT IT BY WEDNESDAY. THERE WILL BE NO TALK OF ANYTHING ELSE BUT MICHIGAN VS PURDUE FROM HERE ON OUT. Barely. [Patrick Barron]Look, a week from now we're going to have a lot to talk about. There will be all sorts of new Frames content and we can erase the "Michigan ain't played no one" narratives. /glances at Twitter YUP. LOTS OF PENN STATE STUFF TO TALK ABOUT. DID YOU SEE THEM STRUGGLING AGAINST INDIANA? Me trying to block out the social media noise [Patrick Barron]So yeah, some pretty pictures. The night lights were neat (I didn't shoot the Bowling Green game so this was my first opportunity). I mean... the landscape stadium lights were neat. There weren't many opportunities for celebration shots because, as it turns out, you can't really take photos when there is no light. Anyways, Michigan gently placed Purdue in a trash can. That's all I have to say about the game itself.   That is no orc horn. [Patrick Barron]Y'all wanted the season to start? It starts now. Buckle up. Remember a few weeks ago when I said this season was like watching Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers? I think we're at the part where the elves show up to Helms Deep.
