Virtual reality program reduces treatment-related side effects in hemodialysis patients Hemodialysis patients routinely experience side effects such as fatigue, lightheadedness and nausea during their treatment sessions. But patients in a study who used a virtual reality program to engage in a mindfulness/meditation exercise reported that these treatment-related symptoms were greatly reduced. Patients in the study wore a head-mounted virtual reality display to participate in a 25-minute mindfulness/meditation intervention called Joviality, a fully immersive experience that transported them to settings away from the clinic. While virtual reality has been found to be beneficial in pain management and physical rehabilitation, its potential for helping dialysis patients contend with the physical side effects and tedium of their treatment sessions has been largely unexplored, said University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign social work professor Rosalba Hernandez, the lead au ....

Credit: Photo courtesy the Beckman Institute Researchers at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology were part of a collaborative effort to investigate a new strategy to manage sodium levels in patients with kidney failure who were undergoing hemodialysis treatment. Thirst and chronic volume overload are some of the most perplexing and clinically significant problems in nephrology, said Kenneth Wilund, a professor of kinesiology and community health at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. However, the methods to treat these symptoms such as dietary and behavioral counseling are often ineffective. The study showed that four weeks of home-delivered, low sodium meals reduced weight gain associated with salt and water intake between hemodialysis sessions. ....
Posted on 212 Mom’s Meals, a leading, national provider of home-delivered meals, announces today results of a study published by Hemodialysis International evaluating the impact of home-delivered meals to help support reduction in dietary sodium and meet health goals among hemodialysis (HD) patients. The study results show that kidney-friendly, home-delivered meals are an effective approach to improving volume control and blood pressure of these patients. The study monitored 20 qualifying HD patients who followed a usual (control) diet for the first four weeks followed by four weeks of three low-sodium, home-delivered meals per day (provided by Mom’s Meals). Mike Anderson, president of Mom’s Meals, reacted to the study results, “We were delighted to see the promising results from this investigator-driven clinical trial. The health improvements experienced by the study volunteers are consiste ....
