Former Oconto County man convicted in crash that killed Abrams teen
OCONTO - A jury convicted a former Oconto County man Thursday on five charges filed over a crash more than two years ago that killed a 14-year-old Abrams girl and seriously injured another teen.
Cade J. Wied, 20, now of De Pere, was found guilty of second-degree homicide, second-degree reckless injury, knowingly operating a motor vehicle while suspended-causing death and knowingly operating a motor vehicle while suspended-causing injury.
The former Sobieski man was also convicted of obstructing an officer for attempting to mislead investigators over who was driving at the time of the Dec. 14, 2018, crash in which September Deneys, a freshman at Pulaski High School, died. ....

Republican Behnke wins 89th District seat

OCONTO – The 89th Assembly District will continue to be represented by a Republican, as Elijah Behnke won the seat in a special election Tuesday.
The rural Oconto man defeated Democrat Karl Jaeger of Marinette in the heavily Republican district, which stretches from Marinette through the eastern towns of Oconto County to Suamico and Howard in Brown County.
The Associated Press called the race with 16 of 20 precincts reporting and Behnke with 63% of the vote 7,255 votes to Jaeger s 4,343.
Behnke, 38, a cleaning company owner who also operates a hobby farm, advanced to the general election winning nearly 45% of the vote in a five-way primary in February. ....

OCONTO - A Suring village trustee, accused last week of sexually assaulting a teen over a five-year period, was charged Monday with the sexual assault of a teen in 2008.
The victim told a deputy on March 12 that she was 14 when she met John Fredenburgh, who at the time lived at the same apartment building in the town of Wabeno as her best friend.
According to the criminal complaint, the two began communicating online and later through texts, and he eventually proposed meeting her for sex.
The girl said she went to stay with a relative in the town of Lakewood, then left after everyone else was asleep. They met up and Fredenburgh drove her to a remote road, where the assault occurred. He then dropped her off where he picked her up. ....
