Higher building costs impact King George's future courthouse

King George County is facing the same pain in the wallet as everyone else who’s recently bought lumber at a home improvement store.
The cost of building materials has gone through the roof, as it were, after lumberyards either shut down during the pandemic or their supply chains were disrupted. The issues caused lumber prices to rise by 130 percent in the last year, according to the National Association of Home Builders, which estimates the cost of single-family homes has gone up by an average of more than $16,000.

Fredericksburg area farmers markets spring back to life

Mr. Cluck Cluck will be perched among the produce, prepared foods and other products when Long Family Markets reopens Sunday at the 610 Commuter Lot in Stafford County.
Regulars know to be on the lookout for the mask-wearing fabric fowl, who’ll be hidden in a different spot at the market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Sunday through Nov. 21.
“If they find him, they stop by our information tent and let us know where they saw him,” said Robin Lynn Long, market co-owner, chief strategist and chaos coordinator. “Correct answers get a dollar to shop with in the market.”

Four King George grads at U.S. Naval Academy

Elena De La Rosa is well aware that many people she comes in contact with at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis—as well as those who live outside the Fredericksburg area—would have a hard time recognizing her hometown.
“Most people can’t even point out King George on the map,” she said, “but having so many of us here from the same humble beginnings proves that King George High School breeds a caliber of student that are competitive, intelligent and service-oriented.”
De La Rosa, 22, is a senior—a 1/C Midshipman in academy lingo—and one of four King George High School graduates at the naval academy. This year, there’s a King George alum representing every class at the academy, from 4/C, which is the freshman or “plebe” year, to De La Rosa and her fellow seniors, known as “firsties.”

A round-up of area school divisions' post-Winter Break plans

STAFFORD
Stafford County Public Schools announced Tuesday that all students—even those elementary students who had returned to school buildings prior to the break—will attend school virtually Jan. 4–8.
“Students will return to their regularly scheduled learning model the following week,” a press release from the school division states. “Additional adjustments to the schedule will be made if warranted.”
Stafford school buildings will be open the first week of January for students who use the division’s internet cafés, students with certain individualized education plans and certain cosmetology and firefighting students.
FREDERICKSBURG
City Public Schools delayed the start of its hybrid program, which was to have begun for the majority of students Jan. 4.
