Sussex County Commissioners Oppose School State Aid Funding Cuts for Sussex County School Districts May 14, 2021, 3:19 pm | in Sussex County Commissioners Oppose School State Aid Funding Cuts for Sussex County School Districts (Newton, NJ) Members of Sussex County’s Board of County Commissioners unanimously voted on a resolution at their Wednesday night meeting, in opposition to the cuts in state aid for the majority of schools countywide, recently announced by Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration. The resolution urges the New Jersey Department of Education, Office of School Finance, to restore funding to the districts that were slashed. According to the resolution, many of Sussex County’s schools have been subject to a sharp decrease in school funding, with 14 other counties in the state experiencing a climb in their school funding. Fredon, Montague vote no on school budgets New Jersey Herald Fredon and Montague residents rejected their proposed school budgets Tuesday, the first time in nearly a decade either district has held a budget election. In Fredon, unofficial totals showed 254 voting no and 157 voting yes, a rejection rate of 61.8%. In Montague, unofficial totals showed 134 voting no and 76 voting yes, a nearly identical 63.8% rejection rate. Under New Jersey law, the municipal governing body in each town now gets to review the proposed 2021-22 school budgets and recommend changes including possible cuts. The school board in each town can either accept the recommendations or reject them, in which case the executive county superintendent then would have the final say. ....
Peters Valley Craft Gallery chooses annual competition winners New Jersey Herald SANDYSTON In a virtual reception, Peters Valley Craft Gallery announced the winners of its 11th annual high school student art competition. Taking the Best of Show award was Kaitlyn Czifra of Wallkill Valley Regional High School for her work titled Reckoning . Second place was awarded to Sophia Papadopoulo of Blair Academy for her My Imperfect Cracks sculpture. The annual show features two- and three-dimensional artwork by students in grades 9-12 from participating schools in northern New Jersey and adjacent areas of Pennsylvania and New York. Third place was awarded to Kevin Dau from Sparta High School for an installation titled Chasing the Dream, while Cameron Minetti, also from Sparta High School received honorable mention for the stone sculpture, Infinity. ....

Westminster (0-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead early over Grove City (1-0) with two quick goals courtesy of sophomore Hamish Mathwin (Marion, Australia / Westminster) and junior Shawn Kernaghan (Denver, PA / Cocalico) just over five minutes into the contest. The Wolverines responded with four consecutive goals (4-2) and scored seven of the remaining nine goals in the frame to lead 7-4 after one. The Titans deposited the first three goals of the second stanza to knot the game back up at seven a-piece, before Grove City scored two more tallies to take a 9-7 into the halftime break. ....
