Berry was born near South Molton in Devonshire, England, the second of seven sons and one of nine children of Elizabeth Moore Berry and Daniel Berry, the vicar of Molland and Knowstone. He was christened on January 7, 1636, in his father’s Knowstone Parish. In 1652, because of Daniel Berry’s loyalty to the Crown and devotion to the Church of England, local supporters of the Commonwealth drove him from his church and vicarage. John Berry went to sea on a merchant ship out of Plymouth, but a Spanish vessel captured him, and he did not return to England for several years. ....

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report an entry made up of mainly milkers saw another excellent trade for all types. Overall the quality was not up to last week’s levels resulting in fewer over £2000. Older cows were harder to sell whilst young cows attracted a lot of interest.
Top price was an impressive £2350 for a powerful 2½ year old Lydace heifer entered by R Puddy & Son, who had others to £1780. Two quality non pedigree heifers to £2120 and £2100 from JWO Marsh & Partners; £1920 GJ & FL Robertson; £1920 A Ractliffe; £1900 Lawrence & Tapp; £1840 (2x) Snook Ltd and £1800 P Snell. ....

Stags of South Molton report another superb number of lambs this week.
Trade very similar to last week for the 41- 46kg lambs but just a shade back for the heavier lambs.
Not as good a quality entry this week as last, with a large amount of thick lambs on show. Buyers are definitely discounting the over thick lambs and there are a lot coming forward.
Not many lighter lambs forward (under 42kgs) and a lot of lambs in the 47-50kg bracket. Best trade for the handy weight leaner lambs with a lot of these over the 215ppk mark. ....
