New approach leverages macrophages to treat traumatic brain injury

Scientists have created a new treatment for traumatic brain injury (TBI) that shrank brain lesions by 56% and significantly reduced local inflammation levels in pigs.

Using the body's own cells to treat traumatic

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) can cause lasting damage, but stopping the rampant brain inflammation they cause is difficult. A team at the Wyss, @SEAS and @MGH led by Samir Mitragotri has made a new treatment using macrophages - immune cells that migrate to the brain. By attaching microparticle "backpacks" that kept the macrophages in a healing state, they reduced the size of brain lesions by 56% in pigs with a mock TBI.

Shape-shifting immune cells offer new insight

Macrophages, a type of white blood cell that can destroy invading pathogens, have an innate ability to infiltrate tumor cells, making them a potentially important tool for cell therapy but so far, clinical trials have been a disappointment and biologists are trying to figure out why. In a recent paper, Harvard researchers found that a specific phenotype of macrophage was better at traveling to the tumor than others — and it’s not the one that researchers commonly use in the clinic for cancer therapies.

Study reveals a unique mode of cell migration on soft 'viscoelastic' surfaces

Date Time Study reveals a unique mode of cell migration on soft ‘viscoelastic’ surfaces Stanford engineers find that cancer cells exhibit a unique mode of migration on squishy materials, which are similar to biological tissues. In contrast, cell movement – a process central to cancer metastasis and other biological processes – is typically studied on very rigid materials. By Allison Gasparini Inside your body, cell movement plays a crucial role in many significant biological processes, including wound healing, immune respon...

Stem cells use a piston-like engine to 'drive' to their destinations - Vimarsana News

Stem cells use a piston-like engine to 'drive' to their destinations

E-Mail IMAGE: Bone-marrow derived stem cells use the physical force generated by the nucleus to help bore through biological obstacles to reach fractures and help initiate healing. " view more Credit: Hong-pyo Lee Our bodies often dispatch stem cells to mend or replace biological damage, but how these repair agents make their way through dense tissue to arrive at the scene had been a mystery. "How stem cells squeeze through tissue openings a hundred to a thousand times smaller than themselves had been a perplexing question," says Ovijit Chaudhuri, professor of mechanical engineer...
