Kuva Space has won a new contract from the European Space Agency (ESA) worth 1.8 million euros ($1.9 million) as it looks to build its business in Europe.

Kuva Space is awarded a €1.8 million contract to be part of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Civil Security from Space (CSS) programme.

Kuva Space will develop onboard hyperspectral data processing and communications links to help Finnish government agencies focused on border security, wildfires and landslides.

Finnish hyperspectral imaging company Kuva Space has entered the U.S. government market by establishing a new business arm headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia, to provide Earth observation data and services to federal customers. Jerry Welsh, former CEO of the U.S. arm of satellite technology provider ICEYE, has been appointed to the board of directors of Kuva Space U.S. and will oversee the company's expansion efforts in the U.S. public sector, Kuva Space said Wednesday.

While Kuva Space's while full constellation of 100 satellites won't be ready until 2030, the firm can "start providing reliable service to commercial and government customers in the US and our partner nations" once the first two are up, said Jerry Welsh, board member of Kuva's new US arm.
