Giro d'Italia: Two climbs in Dolomites removed from 'queen stage' due to bad weather

Poor weather forced officials to shear two major climbs Monday from the Giro d’Italia’s “queen stage”.
Race officials have altered the route of stage 16 to bypass two climbs — Passo Fedaia and Passo Pordoi — after cold weather and rain descended on northern Italy.
The new stage route retains what was supposed to be the day’s last climb at Passo Giau (2226m), and will conclude after a 17km descent at the planned finish line in Cortina d’Ampezzo in the valley below. The distance is reduced to 155km.

Colombian Egan Bernal tightened his grip on the Giro d'Italia pink jersey with a win in the rain-hit 16th stage on Monday in the Dolomites before the final rest day.
Ineos' Bernal crossed the line alone in the ski resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo to finish 27 seconds ahead of Frenchman Romain Bardet and Italian Damiano Caruso.
The 2019 Tour de France winner now leads Caruso by 2min 24sec with Britain's Hugh Carthy third at 3min 40sec, before Tuesday's rest day. The race ends in Milan on Sunday.

CORTINA D'AMPEZZO - Colombian Egan Bernal confirmed his return to form on Monday winning stage 16 of the Giro d'Italia atop a Dolomite summit, crossing the line solo, his arms aloft and the overall leader's pink jersey on his back, positioning himself for victory in the final week of the race.
