The unions would no have hope of passing the deal in a free, democratically-run vote. This is why they have no intention of conducting one. This underscores the need for the rank-and-file to organize themselves to take control over the entire process.
The debate revealed two irreconcilable positions. Lehman advanced a program of abolishing the UAW apparatus, which he called “a subdivision of the companies,” and transferring power to the workers on the shop floor. All the other candidates who spoke represented and defended this apparatus.
Workers must take this as a serious warning that they must take matters into their own hands to countermand the unions’ betrayal.
