Centesimus Annus in 2021 | Raymond J. de Souza

May 1 brought back happy memories for devotees of St. John Paul II. On that date ten years ago, Benedict XVI beatified his predecessor in a St. Peter’s Square still echoing with the “
santo subito” chants of six years earlier. It was the last great beatification or canonization in Rome in the John Paul style of celebration—that of the massive international festivals that marked the elevations of Maximilian Kolbe, Edith Stein, Padre Pio, or Mother Teresa.
Under Pope Francis, the ceremonies have been subdued in the extreme, even for his personal heroes, St. Paul VI and St. Oscar Romero. In 2019, he canonized Sister Dulce Lopes Pontes, the “Mother Teresa of Brazil” and a national heroine, without mentioning her name.

Quebec bishops push for 'just recovery'

Quebec bishops push for ‘just recovery’
May 1, 2021
Quebec’s Catholic bishops don’t just want a recovery, they want change.
The Quebec Assembly of Catholic Bishops’ annual May Day message calls for a basic income, higher minimum wage, an economy less dependent on fossil fuels, tax reform that redistributes wealth away from the wealthy and policies that recognize how women have been disadvantaged in our economy.
“Women and young people have been especially hard hit,” the bishops write in “Towards a Just Recovery: Paying Attention to the Lives of Workers.”
“The ordeal of the COVID-19 pandemic” inspired the bishops to take on the economic inequities that have driven a 35- to 40-per-cent increase in food bank use in Quebec.

Keeping the common good after COVID

Keeping the common good after COVID

At a press conference once, I revealed that my Mum raised me in three great faiths: the Catholic Church, the Australian Labor Party, and the South Sydney Rabbitohs. They all played roles in my childhood, each one of them in separate ways. Each brought a different strength that I was able to call on as I was growing up. And in different ways, I needed them all.
I grew up in public housing, raised by a single mother on the disability pension. Mum was crippled by rheumatoid arthritis, and I still think about how hard things must have been for her. And yet she shone so brightly in my life. She was a strong woman with a sharp mind and the biggest heart. I saw in her the most profound inner strength. Through her own example, she taught me love and compassion. As we made our way together in life, I learnt about community and the power of pulling together.

St. Joseph Patron of OFWs

Published December 29, 2020, 6:00 AM
Filipino workers abroad have once again saved the day for the Philippine economy during the ongoing pandemic.  As they did during the Great Recession of 2008 to 2012, they are softening the blow of the world-wide depression caused by COVID-19 by continuing to send a good portion of their earnings to their loved ones in the Philippines.  Already in September and October 2020, the remittances they sent home had started to climb despite the fact that hundreds of thousands of them were forced to return home as they were laid off from work, especially in the Middle East.  Thanks to the land-based  OFWs who have kept their jobs, their extra generosity during these hard times is limiting the decline of remittances to less than one percent decline on  a year to year basis.   In fact, they may still surprise us during the months of November and December since as Christmas approached,  their generosity could even prevent an actual decline of remittances for the whole year.  There is no question that without them, the GDP of the Philippines would have suffered worse declines, not only for the entire year of 2020, but even in the first quarter or so of 2021 when second or even third waves of the virus are expected to  lead to more economically paralyzing lockdowns.
