Summary
FPU suspended its operations in October last year which gave fishermen free rein for several months.
Mr Godfrey Ssenyonga Kambugu, the chairperson of the Association of Fishers and Lake Users of Uganda, said illegal and over fishing is partly to blame for the current situation.
Between December 2020 and February communities living in and around the shores of Lake Victoria complained of mass death of fish, especially Nile Perch, which were being washed ashore.

At some landing sites, which are usually a beehive of activity, there is no business going on.
Sector players are blaming the situation on the ongoing mass death of fish, particularly the Nile Perch, which has left the lake with no stock. This has also pushed the fish prices high.
Currently, a kilogramme of Nile Perch sells between Shs14,000 and Shs16,000 at various fish markets in most urban centres, up from Shs12,000  a month ago,   while Tilapia costs  Shs12,000 compared to  Shs7,000  a month ago .

An estimated 100 tonnes of fish, mainly Nile Perch, have so far died mysteriously in a space  of two months at various landing sites around Lake Victoria, government has revealed.
Ms Joyce Ikwaput Nyeko, the acting director for Fisheries Resources in the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, said the continuing mass deaths of Nile Perch is causing huge loss of revenue to government.
