Varanasi Lake was in the limelight when the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Lakes Department recovered one acre and six guntas of lake land from land sharks in July 2021. Bangalore Mirror reported about the recovery of land from Varanasi and Junnasandra lakes on July 3.

Broken path, fading light

Lack of lights is another problem for the people who visit the lake in the evening. Though the entry to the lake is closed by 7 pm, the residents want the BBMP Lakes Department to install lights and keep the lake bund free from weeds.

The pooja was held in December 2021 by the then Urban Development Minister Byrathi Basavaraj and work order was issued to a contractor in January 2022 but the rejuvenation of the lake is yet to begin.

A year ago, this very lake was a subject of concern, with its overgrown weeds dominating the landscape. On August 21, 2022, Bangalore Mirror published an article “Lake’s Sake,” which highlighted the alarming state of the lake. The report highlighted how the BBMP Lakes Department’s lack of supervision or inspection of the rejuvenated lake had an adverse impact on the water body. The lake was rejuvenated at an estimated cost of Rs 3 crore four years ago.

Some of the environment-conscious residents and lake activists expressed disappointment over the shoddy rejuvenation work at Srigandadakaval Lake. “The size of the lake has been reduced drastically. It has come down from 6.20 acres to 4 acres. The authorities must make efforts to retain the lake,’’ said Vasu C, a resident of Health Layout.
