The steep rise in COVID-19 infections has raised anxiety levels among many persons. Psychiatrists say they are seeing more people with depression and anxiety, while every psychiatric disorder is worsening in the midst of the second wave of the pandemic.
The number of persons testing positive for COVID-19 in the State has been increasing daily. Simultaneously, there are growing concerns on bed availability and oxygen supply. How the fresh wave of infections has been impacting the mental health of people and the need to seek help is of equal importance, say doctors. ....

The Hindu have organised a 15-part webinar series SRM Virtual Conclave for Career Guidance 2021 focussing on science, engineering, and technology courses and their relevance to the 2020s workplace.
The first in the series, ‘Helping Students Navigate Uncertainties during the pandemic’ will be held on May 8 at noon. The session will touch upon anxiety and concerns arising from exams being cancelled and postponed.

Project Overview
SPIRIT is a research partnership that aims to bridge the gap between scientific evidence and practice in suicide prevention and mental health interventions in India and Bangladesh. SPIRIT will be implemented by the Indian Law Society, Pune, India; in collaboration with Trimbos Institute, Netherlands; Sneha Suicide Prevention Centre, Chennai, India; Gujarat Institute for Mental Health & Hospital for Mental Health, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India; and the Bangladesh Center for Communication Programs, Bangladesh. The project is supported by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Gujarat, and funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. The project has received approval from the Health Ministry Screening Committee of the Government of India. ....

A new strategy to reduce suicide by pesticide poisoning

Last September, a teenage girl in a village in southern India ended her life after an argument with her family. She had been reprimanded by her father for misplacing the papers she needed to take the entrance test to medical school. Distraught, she swallowed pesticide that her father, a farmer, kept for use on crops.
Consuming pesticides intentionally is almost unheard of in the United States. But in many parts of the world especially in Asian countries where farming remains small-scale and pesticide use is poorly regulated ingesting hazardous chemicals is a leading method of suicide. Globally, an estimated 110,000 to 168,000 lives are lost to this act every year, accounting for about 14 to 20 percent of overall suicides, according to a 2017 assessment in the Journal of Affective Disorders. ....
