Under state law, the commissioners can lease the 1860 building for under $25,000 a year for up to three years without the council’s approval.

The Porter County Park Board hopes to make a new 63.5-acre park available in Kouts by next spring. Named Aukiki Park through a naming contest in Porter County schools in 2017, the park, which will be located on Indiana 49, has been a dream since the Park Board purchased the property in 2014.

The Porter County Board of Commissioners held an administrative meeting Tuesday afternoon to debrief members of the Porter County Council who are liaisons to the Porter County Highway Department on the need to replace the 63-year-old central garage and financing options for the estimated $23.6 million cost.

Porter County Democratic Party Chair Brendan Clancy has tendered his resignation, and while the party won’t formally caucus to replace him until May 20, it looks as if Ward 2 Porter Town Council Member Don Craft will be the new leader.
