Burns night has been and gone, but poetry is for every night, and day. It’s a source of solace, comfort and cheer in difficult times like this current pandemic and lockdown So here, to help you through, are twenty of Scotland’s greatest poets, who aren’t Robert Burns.

“Back to Dunbar!” was a favourite phrase of Hugh MacDiarmid, and the man he was talking about was a Middle Scots poet attached to the court of James IV, who wrote works that were rhetorical and lyrical marvels. Dunbar was one of a group of medieval Scots known as the “makars” and for him the writing of poetry was making . He created poems for his patron, such as The Thrissil and the Rois, a celebration of James IV s marriage to Margaret Tudor. But Dunbar was about more than creating snapshots of court. Bhanu Kapil wins T.S. Eliot Prize at digital awards ceremony – The Poetry Society

From this impressive field, we unanimously chose Bhanu Kapil’s How to Wash a Heart as our winner. It is a radical and arresting collection that recalibrates what it’s possible for poetry to achieve.”
Bhanu Kapil was born in England to Indian parents, and she grew up in a South Asian, working-class community in London. She lives between the UK and the US, where she spent 21 years at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado. She is the author of six books of poetry/prose: ....

British-Indian poet Bhanu Kapil wins TS Eliot Prize for 'radical' work

It might be the award most poets only dream of winning, but this year it s British-Indian writer Bhanu Kapil s turn to bag the top accolade in the TS Eliot Prize for poetry.
Known as the most valuable award for British poetry, Kapil won for her collection of poems called
How to Wash a Heart, in which she explores the dynamics between an immigrant and her white, middle-class host.
