Former OU dean Radhe Shyam Sharma passes away

Born in Tinsukia, Assam, Prof. Sharma graduated from the Gauhati University in 1962.
After special assistance from the Indian government, Prof. Sharma did his post-graduate degree in English Literature and bagged the William Shakespeare Gold Medal in1965.
In the year 1965, he joined the University as a lecturer and formed a young lecturers association. Later, he obtained a Second Masters’s degree by completing his works on a series on William Shakespeare. He went on to complete his Ph.D. from the Osmania University. ....

'Chinese loans cannot prevent the rupee from depreciating' - Economic analysts

Economic analysts stated that despite a US dollar 500 million loan from the China Development Bank, it is not a strong factor in preventing the rupee from depreciating.
Sri Lanka received a US dollar 500 million loan from the Chinese Development Bank yesterday (15) as part of the 2020 Foreign Exchange Term Financial Facility signed on 18 March last year.
The rupee hit an all-time low of 204 against the US dollar yesterday, hitting a record low of 204 rupees and 62 cents.
Accordingly, the rupee has depreciated by more than 8% against the dollar so far this year.
Dr. Priyanga Dunusinghe, Senior Lecturer, Department of Economics, University of Colombo, stated that the loan obtained from China would only help to prevent the rupee from depreciating in the short term. ....

Covenant University lecturer arrested for allegedly raping student

A lecturer in the Department of Business Management at the Covenant University Ota, Dr. Stephen Ukenna, has been arrested for allegedly raping a teenage girl.
The victim is a 17-old-year old student of the university.
The 41-year-old lecturer was arrested following a complaint at the Ota Area Command by the girl’s parents.
They alleged their daughter called to report that she was invited by the lecturer to his office on Thursday under the pretence of planning a surprise birthday party for her close friend.
But on getting to Dr. Stephen’s office, he reportedly seized her, locked the door and forcefully had sex with her atop a table. ....
