Lee County commissioners on Monday rejected Gov. Roy Cooperâs request for counties to impose civil penalties against those who violate his COVID-19 executive order. The commission, minus Robert Reives whoâs been out for an unknown reason, unanimously adopted a resolution presented by Commissioner Bill Carver. In the resolution, Carver said that the county, local businesses, schools and law enforcement were responding appropriately to the pandemic and that the board should not create laws that would fine people for not wearing masks or violating gathering limits. âWe also need to recognize that ... imposing those kinds of constraints, those kinds of civil penalties, would be onerous to the sheriffâs department. They have their hands full right now, and to chase around and to do this kind of thing â Iâm speaking for some input from the sheriff â he just really finds that, that would be difficult,â Carver said.
