A persistent manpower shortage at public hospitals means long waiting times at accident and emergency wards, with patients having to wait anywhere between two and more than eight hours.
Tragedy struck on Monday when a chronically-ill woman was discovered dead in a hospital toilet – after waiting for more than 10 hours to see a doctor.
Health minister Lo Chung-mau says the government will look at ways to improve the situation – and pointed to a new talent exchange with the Greater Bay Area that has just seen the arrival of dozens of medical staff from Guangdong.
And the Hospital Authority says 20 medics have agreed to come work here following a recruitment drive in London earlier this month.
