Who came to the house, i was aware of the unnaturalness of south african society. your parents were very anti apartheid although they weren t members of the anc but they represented people like nelson mandela, desmond tutu, one would have expected you to perhaps have followed in their footsteps because you did after all study african studies and politics. i think there is a strange relationship between my parents being lawyers and me being an artist. that was a sense of needing to find a way of finding my own opinion that would be impervious to a parents cross examination. it needed to be a way of making knowledge in the world that was not the same as the linear, logic of the law. i think it s partly as a. every child having to find a defence against the power of parents and for me, it was through becoming an artist. i only realised this years and years and months of therapy later to understand what that connection was, but ....
