Former Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan, has condemned the move by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to appeal the recent ruling by High Court Judge Sandil Kissoon regarding oil spill insurance and the parent company guarantee by ExxonMobil, calling it a “shameful” and “anti-national” appeal of the “powerful” ruling.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Thursday issued a press release saying that it is confident of being successful in its appeal to the court’s ruling which ordered that ExxonMobil Guyana parent company cover all costs for an oil disaster at its Liza Phase One drilling project offshore Guyana.
The first hearing of a legal proceeding levelled against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), challenging a Permit granted to ExxonMobil Guyana (Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited- EEPGL) for the construction and operation a 12-inch natural gas pipeline, will take place on Thursday in the High Court.
“The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has relegated itself to a state of laxity of enforcement and condonation compounded by a lack of vigilance thereby putting this nation and its people in grave potential danger of calamitous disaster,” those were the words of High Court Judge, Justice Sandil Kissoon, when he handed down his ruling in a monumental case against Guyana’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and ‘ExxonMobil Guyana,’ Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL).
