Ever since he directed the hard-hitting TV film Cathy Come Home back in 1966, Ken Loach has been the most fearlessly realist of English directors, offering unflinching insights into the lives and struggles of the marginalised. Since 1996, the 87-year-old has been in constant collaboration with the screenwriter Paul Laverty, and together they’ve created a remarkable body of work, from Carla’s Song and My Name is Joe to Sweet Sixteen, Jimmy’s Hall and I, Daniel Blake.
