Hades Is Unusually Shy About Greek Myth’s Rampant Incest Hades is 2020’s indie hit, a fantastic action game that uses the characters we all know from Greek mythology to tell its story about determination and strained familial relationships. Except the game’s version of the mythological characters are perhaps not quite as messed up as their mythological counterparts because Hades goes out of its way to avoid the main character being born of incest. If you know anything about the Greek myths and how they originated, you’ll know the stories we have now have not existed in a single, homogenous “canon” for very long. Everything we now commonly attribute to the religion of the Ancient Greeks was distilled over a long period of time from a panoply of local cults and oral traditions that eventually trickled down to us in its current form thanks to the likes of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Homer, Ovid, Hesiod, and several others I’m forgetting. ....
Hades Takes Game Of The Year At 10th Annual New York Game Awards Hades has been an undeniable success for Supergiant Games. Coming out of early access last September, we thought this roguelike action RPG was simply incredible – giving it 10/10 stars – and other critics agreed. Having taken Best Indie and Best Action at The Game Awards last month, the New York Game Awards has now gone one step further, naming it the Game Of The Year. It didn t stop there for Hades, either – it has also won 5 awards in total, including Best Writing, Best Music, and Best Indie Game. For his role as Lord Hades, Poseidon, Achilles, Charon, The Storyteller and Asterius, Logan Cunningham was also awarded Best Acting in a Game. ....

Let s start with Call of Duty: Warzone, which I spent much of the first half of 2020 playing almost exclusively. This isn t one for memorable music, but it is one for memorable sound. Infinity Ward did a cracking job with the sound of Modern Warfare and Warzone s weapons. They thunder from the middle of the screen! Sniper rifles boom and crack realistically, echoing across the Verdansk expanse. It s the zip of fire that races past your head, coming from the rooftop over the hill somewhere. And the footsteps. Oh god, the footsteps. At one point, when I was playing Warzone pretty much every night, I could hear the footsteps as I drifted off to sleep, above me or below me, getting louder or quieter. Warzone is one of the best-sounding shooters I ve ever played. Solid copy, IW. ....
