In his first presser since the June 18 election, Iran’s President-elect Ebrahim Raisi announced that Tehran wants closer regional ties and that priority will be given to improving ties with Gulf Arab neighbors. After Iran fell out with Saudi Arabia in 2016, and the two have been engaged in talks hosted by Baghdad since April of this year. ....

Can Chinese investment provide boost to Iran's Chabahar port? - Al Monitor: The Pulse of the Middle East

May 10, 2021
Even though it had been exempted from US economic sanctions, Iran’s Chabahar port project could not take off as various indirect financial drawbacks persisted. Having direct access to the Indian Ocean, the deep-sea port has potential to become a regional trade hub and bring in considerable revenue for Iran.
Yet Chabahar’s fortunes could change soon if China enters the fray. Having finalized a 25-year partnership with Tehran recently, Beijing may invest in the development of the port and help in giving global status.
In an interview with the Tehran Times April 27, Behrouz Aghaei, director general of the Ports and Maritime Department for Iran’s Sistan-Baluchestan province, where Chabahar is located, described a much broader vision for the project, calling it the “Gate of Nations.” ....

Low efficacy rates mar China's COVID diplomacy in Gulf states - Al Monitor: The Pulse of the Middle East

April 30, 2021
While flight suspensions and vaccine-linked travel curbs continue to impact the states of the Gulf Cooperation Council, most of the latter have ramped up their vaccination campaigns. Nearby countries like India are in crisis and the Arab states would like to be risk-free zones.
The vaccine has been made virtually compulsory and, in some states, most leisure activities have been limited to those who have gotten the shot. Upgrading public health security, Abu Dhabi is even mulling measures to restrict the movement of some unvaccinated workers.
Saif al-Dhaheri, spokesperson for the National Emergency Crisis & Disaster Management Authority, announced April 21, “The vaccine is our best means to recover and return to a normal life.” Having administered at least 3.8 million doses, Abu Dhabi has achieved a vaccination rate of 100.1 doses per 100 residents. The country is using multiple vaccines, each of which require two doses. ....

Will Saudi Arabia Change Its Stance On Kashmir As Imran Khan Tries To Mend Ties With Riyadh?

Will Saudi Arabia Change Its Stance On Kashmir As Imran Khan Tries To Mend Ties With Riyadh?
February 24, 2021
The Imran Khan government in Pakistan is trying to mend its ties with Saudi Arabia, which had hit a low last year. Does this mean Riyadh will change its stance on Kashmir?
While the Pakistan-Saudi relations hit a rough patch in 2020, both New Delhi and Riyadh strengthened their ties and pledged to work together in various sectors. All this while, Islamabad’s rhetoric on Kashmir has not found any takers among its allies, including Saudi Arabia.
In August 2020, cracks had surfaced in the Pakistan-Saudi relations after Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had asked the Riyadh-led Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to “stop dilly-dallying” on the convening of a meeting of its Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) on Kashmir. ....
