Sasco mulls legal action after prospective WSU students denied admission

The SA Students Congress is threatening legal action against Walter Sisulu University after a number of prospective students were told there is no room for them to study despite their having paid registration fees.

WSU degree not recognised by health body for 10 years

Walter Sisulu University has been offering a programme, described as "useless" by past graduates, and slated by health academics for its lack of utility, without the required professional recognition for 10 years. The university's Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion is not registered by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and a senior university employee who asked not to be named confirmed that “thousands” of students were affected.

Demand for forensic probe as WSU campuses are shut

Walter Sisulu University (WSU) students have called for a forensic investigation into the university’s qualifications. The call comes as students have shut down three of the university’s four campuses after it was discovered that the university was offering several unaccredited qualifications. The shutdown began on Wednesday last week in two campuses — Buffalo City and Butterworth — and has since spread to the main campus in Mthatha.

Two Walter Sisulu University campuses were closed on Thursday as furious students demanded answers on the university’s accreditation crisis. All operations at Buffalo City and Butterworth came to a halt early in the day. Mthatha campus has issued a notice of its intent to close on Friday. Walter Sisulu University (WSU) is believed to have continued to offer non-accredited programmes to students despite those qualifications not being found on the records of regulatory bodies. The Council on Higher Education, the SA Qualifications Authority and the department of higher education and training released a joint statement on Friday detailing the list of qualifications in question.
