Light Elements

Agusan Marsh from above
As a “skywatcher,” he sets up outdoors in the still of the night with his SW Star Adventurer Pro, Fuji XT3, and Canon 70200 to capture images of the Andromeda Galaxy or the Pleaides, all the while taking field notes that he shares with fellow enthusiasts. As an event photographer, he tries to capture the fun essence of the celebrations through light moments.

With the art of photography, he shares that it is the process itself that has him hooked. “It is when you have to assemble elements with the thought of how you want your photo to turn out along with the process of editing your photo. There’s a thrill of getting your final output the way to envisioned it to be. If it does not turn out the way you planned, then it’s a learning opportunity to try again.”

Cinematic Themes

“Prior to that, I was just taking pictures using point-and-shoot cameras, action cameras (GoPro) and mobile phones,” Martin shares.
Though fairly a newbie, he has gathered significant experiences in the field, especially where helping out is concerned. “My significant experience as a lensman was organizing and participating in various charity events such as shoots for a cause and charity pageants. As OFWs, we want to help in, one way or another, our fellow Filipinos who were devastated by calamities from the earthquake in Mindanao to the floods in Bicol as well in Northern Luzon. This was our way of extending our help even though we are far from home.”

Calming Images

Ricefield
He was inspired by this incident and took all the opportunities to learn about landscape, events, and portrait photography. “I still struggled with it, until Steve introduced me to his friend Raymond T. Cruz who became my mentor and closest friend as well. He enlightened me, ignited my passion and pushed me to the limit.  I’m so grateful and thankful to these two friends who were a part of my photography beginnings.”

From there, he developed his own style, which is also a trademark of his videography work on commercials and films. “Most of my photographs are digital and created in calm situations, either black-and-white photos or colored photos. I really love isolating my subjects and building my impression artistically.  Most of my images have the water element present, for it is articulate, clever and introspective, self-contained and self-sufficient all at once.” His entry to Long Exposure Photography Magazine (LEMAG) was included in its March 2020 Edition on Wonderful Waterfalls.

A Story of Legacy

By

As he was growing up in his idyllic hometown, Sherwin Sapong was proud of his father’s work. The late Nilo Sapong was a journalist who contributed to local newspapers such as

“I got to see his work and he taught me about photography, but I never clicked a camera until my 20s when my father gave me a film camera.” His initial venture into photography didn’t last long, however, as he sheepishly recalls an accident when the camera fell underwater. “It was in my late 30s when I started again, because my brother gifted me with a DSLR and I fell in love with it. This made me determined to pursue photography seriously, as my goal was to also contribute to local and national newspapers.”

Recording History

It takes a special level of daring to document the most dangerous situations, and Emerito Antonio has that in spades. Drawn by the action of the 1986 EDSA Revolution, he headed to the streets with a film camera and a feeling of excitement. He took photos of the monumental event, not even knowing if he would be able to print his shots, much less have them published.

“Ever since I was a child, I was fascinated with cameras. There are times that I would use my OFW uncle’s camera without his permission, I had to save money for film and processing and there were times that I don’t even see the pictures because I have no money left for printing,” he recalled.

What is most important in a visual medium is that you have a love of what you are doing as this will reflect on your work.  “You always have to show to your subject or model how passionate you are about doing your job. I always want to have my adrenaline high because this is where I base my ideas or strategies to think fast and conceptualize my shots,” he explains.

Surprisingly, Omell says that he went straight to aerial photography without much experience with a handheld DSLR. He adds that those who have started with a DSLR can try using drones and vice versa.

“It’s ok whether you start with drone photography or ground photography. It depends on what you want or what you have already done. If you’re already a photographer, you just need to learn how to fly a drone and focus on flying. On the other side, if you don’t have a camera yet but starting on how to fly drones, the problem will be composition of shots,” he shares.
