Election Commission has banned victory rallies after May 2 results NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Tuesday barred victory processions on May 2, the counting day for assembly polls in four states and a Union territory as well as various bypolls, in view of the surge in Covid-19 cases throughout the country. As per an order issued by the poll panel a day after the Madras High Court pulled it up for failing to enforce Covid protocols during the poll campaign, no victory procession after the counting on May 2 shall be permissible. Also, not more than two persons shall be allowed to accompany the winning candidate or his/her authorized representative to receive the certificate of election from the concerned returning officer.

He said women should be deployed at polling stations close to their residences and necessary transportation must be provided to them. He also insisted on providing hygienic toilet facilities at all stations. Broaching the subject during the hearing of an election related case, the Chief Justice told senior counsel G. Rajagopalan, representing the Commission, “Please take care of women workers as if someone from your or my home was participating.”
