Mehalhel retains control of Weightlifting Federation of Africa Wednesday, 26 May 2021 Khaled Mehalhel has been re-elected for a third term as President of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa (WFA). The Libyan, a clear favourite, won the vote at the Congress that preceded the African Championships in Kenyan capital Nairobi, which were due to begin today. Manareddin Eshelli, Mehalhel’s fellow Libyan, will continue as secretary general, and the new first vice-president is Kevin du Plooy of South Africa, who replaces Salim Musoke of Uganda. On being appointed, Mehalhel told the media in Nairobi that the sport needed to clean up. I would like to call on the athletes to change their mentality and abhor doping, to have a mind shift and not engage in use of banned substances,’ Mehalhel said. ....

The plight of Mona Pretorius highlights the difficulties faced by athletes who cannot travel to the African Championships due to be held in Madagascar in three weeks’ time. At least one other African hopeful for the rearranged Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Roilya Ranaivosoa of Mauritius, is believed to be unable to travel. The news from Pretorius travel agent is that flights to Madagascar are banned from 44 countries, six of them from Africa, including South Africa. ....
