LEXINGTON TWP.  Michael Shreffler is receiving a new three-year contract to remain superintendent of the Marlington Local School District. With a unanimous vote Thursday by the Board of Education, Shreffler was approved for a contract that will run from Aug. 3 of this year until July 31, 2024. He has been interim superintendent for the past several months. CARROLLTON  The suspect in last month's gasoline burning death is facing an eight-count indictment from the Carroll County grand jury as prosecutors revealed additional details of the Jan. 23 incident. Arlen A. Atkinson, 53, is facing one count of aggravated murder and felonious assault, and, two counts each of murder, aggravated arson and kidnapping.  Atkinson, according to investigators and the Carroll County Prosecutor's Office, retrieved a gas can and set fire to his housemate, Scot Hupp, 58. CANTON TWP. Township officials adopted new zoning regulations for skill game parlors that will require them to have a state license before opening. The new regulations also parlor operators to get a township conditional-use permit and have their businesses in industrially zoned districts. Canton Township has seven skill game parlors in its jurisdiction. And officials are look to pursue legal action against four skill game operations. But with the help of $250,000 in state funding, the township park is on the verge of receiving a facelift. CARROLLTON  Carroll County is receiving $4.1 million to bring high-speed broadband service into more rural areas of the county. It's part of the Federal Communications Commission's effort to provide broadband service in rural areas across the country. Ohio is slated to receive $170 million during the first phase of the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund program.  "I view internet service as a necessity in these days," Carroll County Commissioner Christopher Modranski said.
