The crisis in Dublin’s north-east inner city can be traced back, in part, to the story of an American trucker and an old World War II tanker. Tired of waiting for his trucks to be manually unloaded and loaded at the dockside, Malcolm McLean had the idea that the vehicles should carry standardised containers that could be hoisted directly on and off the ship. So, in 1956, he refitted an old tanker and tried it. Loading a ship by hand cost $5.86 per ton; using containers, the cost fell to $0.16 per ton.
