Variants in two gene pathways appear to be directly linked to sarcoma development. The finding offers hope for earlier cancer detection and treatment, suggest researchers.
Heritable pathogenic defects in genes related to mitosis and telomere function may specifically increase the risk for sarcomas – rare cancers that develop in muscles, bones, and other connective tissues, researchers report.
Several genes that cause sarcoma have been identified in the first comprehensive genetic map of sarcomas, generated by research led by Omico, the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and UNSW Sydney.
Understanding the genetic basis of sarcoma will allow earlier detection and better guide treatment.
