THERE has been a mixed response from farming groups to Government plans for legislative changes in key areas covering animal welfare alongside focused actions in the Environment Bill to protect nature. The proposals in the Action Plan for Animal Welfare cover five key areas, including recognition of sentience and the consideration of animal welfare in policy-making and trade negotiations, along with enhanced protection for livestock, pets, and wild animals. NFU president Minette Batters said: “British farmers are proud to have some of the highest standards of animal welfare in the world and it is clear the Government wants to be a global leader in this area. However, we want to see the same energy and leadership that is being proposed for protecting endangered species and wildlife crime to be applied to our asks in equivalence in trade. ....
THE Grove Bookshop in Ilkley has taken delivery of a new book, The Dark Side of the Dales by Mark Bridgeman. Published by Watermill Books in conjunction with Grove Bookshop the book is a compilation of 20 true crime stories from newspaper archives, including events in Ilkley, Otley and Wharfedale from 1835 to the 1980s. The stories of murder, mystery and myth include: murders in Ilkley and Otley; a body in a trunk mystery in Wharfedale; fraudulent marriage offers and jewel robberies in Harrogate.
