Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order Tuesday that bans local governments and public schools from requiring masks.

May 18, 2021 Austin-Travis County Public Health is loosening mask rules a bit. The health authority announced today those who are fully vaccinated against coronavirus do not have to have their faces covered indoors if there's less than 500 people inside a building. Masks are still required at outdoor events with more than 2,500 people in attendance. Interim Health Authority Dr. Mark Escott is hoping businesses will still require face coverings through at least mid-June. View Comments The European Union on Wednesday announced plans to reopen its borders to fully vaccinated visitors, as well as to a list of countries considered safe, with the United States expected to make the cut.  All visitors from a list of nations considered safe will also be allowed in, a spokesperson said, although it's unclear when these new rules will go into effect. An updated list of countries that meet the new criteria is expected soon, and many experts expect the United States to be included.
