One of WMU's self watering planters sits in the Deither H. Haenicke Memorial Garden outside the chemistry building. Aya Miller, Editor-in-Cheif Landscape Services at WMU have taken the âteach a man to fishâ idiom to a new level with self-watering planters. Crafted from recycled plastic and carpet, the planters work to retain water and fertilizer, reducing the need to be watered from thrice weekly to once every three weeks. Spring has finally arrived and Western Michigan Universityâs Facilities Management is prepared to bring that feeling to students on campus. Mark Frever, director of landscaping, said students can look for many colorful flowers and bright green grass that has recovered from the winter.
