Self-watering planters combine sustainability and self-sufficiency


One of WMU s self watering planters sits in the Deither H. Haenicke Memorial Garden outside the chemistry building.

Landscape Services at WMU have taken the ‘teach a man to fish’ idiom to a new level with self-watering planters. Crafted from recycled plastic and carpet, the planters work to retain water and fertilizer, reducing the need to be watered from thrice weekly to once every three weeks.
The new planters were manufactured by EarthPlanters and were purchased with help from a grant from the Office of Sustainability. David Prellwitz, a groundskeeper for Landscape Services, and Rhonda Cosby, master gardener, co-authored the grant in 2020. ....

Reusable menstruation products to be distributed on campus

The Lawrence University Environmental Organization is introducing a sustainable menstruation project in collaboration with the Student Alliance Against Sexual Harassment and Assault (SAASHA), the Lawrence University Disability Working Group (LUDWiG), the Diversity and Intercultural Center (D&IC) and the Lawrence Food Pantry.  
According to junior Lauren Kelly, the president of the LU Environmental Organization, SAASHA will be educating students on period poverty and how to use these products. Kelly also explained that LUDWiG helped make sure the project will be as accessible as possible by suggesting the D&IC as a pick-up location and an option for delivery. As there can be stigmas associated with periods, Kelly emphasized that they are not promoting shame and selected safe locations for pick-ups.  ....

Applications for the UK Sustainability Challenge Grant Program Now Being Accepted


Students take measurements on a street tree as part of a previously funded Challenge Grant Project that focused on preparing urban forests for a changing climate.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 21, 2021) The Sustainability Challenge Grant Program is designed to engage multidisciplinary teams from the university community to foster scholarly, creative and research projects that promote sustainability and advance field(s) of study. Sustainability, in this context, is intended to convey the need to pursue activities that are ecologically sound, socially just and economically viable. 
Applications for the University of Kentucky Sustainability Challenge Grant Program are being accepted now through May 28, 2021. Total project funds available are expected to be $200,000 with individual projects eligible to receive up to $50,000. Application materials can be found on the UK Sustainability website. ....
