USA TODAY WASHINGTON – Thursday's U.S. airstrikes against Iranian-backed militants in Syria served more as a message to American adversaries and allies in the Middle East than retaliation for a deadly rocket attack last week in Iraq, according to military experts.  The bombing runs, the first authorized by President Joe Biden, seem aimed at showing such adversaries as Iran, Syria and Russia that the U.S. intends to remain engaged in the region.
