Archaeologists have discovered the first known example of a pregnant mummy. The ancient remains are said date to the first century B.C. and were discovered in Thebes back in 1826—but experts had long assumed the specimen was male, thanks to inscription on the sarcophagus naming an Egyptian priest.
“Our first surprise was that it has no penis, but instead it has breasts and long hair, and then we found out that it’s a pregnant woman,” archaeologist Marzena Ozarek-Szilke told the Associated Press. “When we saw the little foot and then the little hand [of the fetus], we were really shocked.”

First Ever Pregnant Mummy Found in Egypt | Mysterious Universe

For the first time ever, a pregnant mummy has been discovered in Egypt. Archaeologists performed X-ray scans on the woman’s remains and they were incredibly surprised to find out that she was several months pregnant when she died around 2,000 years ago, making her the world’s first known pregnant mummy.
According to the X-ray and CT scans that were conducted as part of the Warsaw Mummy Project, the woman was between 20 and 30 years of age when she died and by analyzing the fetus’ head, she was between 26 and 28 weeks pregnant. In fact, researchers noted that her remains were very well preserved.

Researchers 'Shocked' To Discover 2,000-Year-Old Egyptian Mummy Was A Pregnant Woman

By: CBS News
Researchers examining an ancient Egyptian mummy thought that they were looking at the body of a male priest. Instead, they were shocked to discover the body was actually a woman — who had been seven months pregnant at the time of her death.
According to a new study in the Journal of Archaeological Science, X-rays and computer tests finally revealed the mummy's true identity, showing the small hands and feet of a fetus. Researchers in Poland said it's the first and only known case of a well-preserved mummified pregnant woman.
The mummy dates back to the first century B.C. and is believed to come from royal tombs in Thebes in Upper Egypt. It first arrived in Warsaw in 1826.

An ancient Egyptian mummy once believed to be the remains of a male priest is actually the embalmed body of a woman in the third trimester of pregnancy, Polish scientists said on Friday.
Marzena Ozarek-Szilke, an anthropologist at the Warsaw Mummy Project, was examining a CT scan of a mummy at the National Museum in the Polish capital when she spotted something peculiar.
"When I looked at the lesser pelvis of our mummy I was interested in what was inside... I thought I saw a tiny foot," Ozarek-Szilke said.
