Education commissioner gets OK to force schools to reopen

BOSTON (AP) Massachusetts education commissioner has been given the greenlight to compel districts to return to in-person classes, roughly a year after the coronavirus pandemic forced them to shutter schools and switch to online classes.
The Friday decision by the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education follows Republican Gov. Charlie Baker s announcement earlier this week that teachers and other school employees will be eligible for coronavirus vaccinations starting next week.
“Now is the time to begin moving children back to school more robustly,” Education Commissioner Jeffrey Riley said before the board s vote. ....

When Captain Thomas Sankara came into power, he changed the name of his country from Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, literally, “The land of the upright men.” Among other memorable things he did was to decree that all government officials would have to make do with the most basic means of transportation. Leading by example, he discarded the ostentatious motorcades so beloved by African presidents and was often seen riding a bicycle to work.
Cars have always been symbols of success in Africa. One is respected or disdained according to the vehicle they own. Premium is placed on big fuel guzzlers so that one is deemed to have made it in life only when they drive such. The means of attaining these is of no consequence. Appearances trump all sense of propriety to the extent that even thieves are celebrated as long as they have the accoutrements of what is accepted as success. ....

Parent Group Sues BPS to Block New Exam Schools Admissions Plan


In a federal court filing submitted on Friday, the Boston Parents Coalition for Academic Excellence is seeking an injunction to halt the plan, alleging that the committee’s new “Zip Code Quota” will limit children being accepted from certain predominantly Asian and Caucasian zip codes.
Boston Public Schools will welcome back thousands of students into the classrooms beginning on Monday.
“By seeking to apportion admission seats to the exam schools according to zip codes, the School Committee’s purpose and intent is to decrease the number of children from certain racial and ethnic backgrounds from gaining admission to the exam schools, while increasing the number of children who gain admission to the exam schools from other racial and ethnic backgrounds,” the filing reads. ....
